Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reminded that two weeks have already passed since U.S. President Donald Trump gave Russia 14 days to demonstrate readiness for negotiations. He made this statement in his evening address on August 31, reports G.business with reference to president.gov.ua.
Zelensky emphasized that the demand was first voiced in Washington, where it was announced that Russia had two weeks to confirm whether it was prepared for genuine talks and a possible leaders’ summit. He underlined that Ukraine expects a strong and united position from the United States, Europe, and the G20 against Russia’s attempts to prolong the war.
“Ukraine is undoubtedly ready for dialogue at the leaders’ level. But the only thing Russia is doing is investing in further war. All their signals point exactly to that,” Zelensky said.
Earlier, Donald Trump stated that during his conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, he initiated preparations for a meeting between the Kremlin’s head and Zelensky. According to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Putin expressed readiness for such a meeting, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed the need for thorough preparation.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz initially suggested that the meeting could take place within weeks. However, after Russia’s large-scale missile strike on Kyiv, he admitted that such a summit between Zelensky and Putin is “obviously off the table.”
Between August 18 and 24, Ukrainian officials held multiple talks with foreign partners regarding potential venues for negotiations, as well as possible frameworks for international security guarantees for Ukraine.
