Poland will reintroduce temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania starting July 7, 2025. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the decision on Tuesday, citing rising concerns over illegal migration along the country’s western and eastern borders. G.Business reports, referencing Polsat News.
“We have decided to restore temporary controls at the borders with Lithuania and Germany. The decision was made today and will take effect on Monday, July 7,” said Tusk during a press briefing ahead of the government’s cabinet meeting. The plan will be implemented by the Minister of the Interior, Tomasz Siemoniak.
Security and political tensions
Tusk noted that he had repeatedly warned the German government and discussed the matter with the new Chancellor. Regions near the affected borders will be placed under heightened surveillance by Polish security services.
The decision followed a morning briefing involving Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Border Guard officials. Tusk also delivered strong criticism toward opposition politicians and President-elect Karol Nawrocki, accusing them of undermining trust in national security forces.
“Those who support far-right activists like Mr. Bąkiewicz, who disrupt the work of border guards, are acting against the state's security,” Tusk said.
Migration debate intensifies
The opposition PiS party has accused the government of "losing control" of the western border. Politicians such as Krzysztof Bosak claimed that border agents are regularly transporting migrants to various locations inland, including parks, train stations, and shelters.
President-elect Nawrocki said he plans to convene a special Cabinet session on migration after taking office and will request full access to statistical data.
Lithuania caught off guard
According to media reports, Lithuania was not officially informed of Poland’s decision in advance, leading to diplomatic unease between the neighboring countries.
