Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has expressed optimism that Russia and Ukraine could reach an agreement to end the ongoing war. According to Erdoğan, the “peace table” will once again be set in Turkey. G.Business reports with reference to Hürriyet.

In his public address, Erdoğan stated that Turkey had stepped up its diplomatic activities to facilitate peace, particularly due to the increasing number of crises and armed conflicts in neighboring countries. He emphasized that Ankara had consistently followed a policy aimed at promoting peaceful solutions.

Speaking about the Russian war against Ukraine, Erdoğan reiterated that Turkey continues to pursue what he described as “a policy of peace.” He referenced earlier negotiations hosted in Turkey, notably the third round of talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, which took place in Istanbul. During that meeting, both sides reportedly agreed on a new prisoner exchange arrangement.

“We believe that this war must come to an end,” Erdoğan said. “Just like the negotiation table was once set in Istanbul, the peace table will again be set in Turkey – and this bloody war will come to an end.”

High-level meeting under discussion

In recent talks, Ukrainian and Russian representatives also discussed the possibility of holding a meeting at the highest level. According to a statement by Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, Ukraine has proposed to Russia the organization of a four-party summit by the end of August 2025.

The proposal includes participation by:

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin
  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan
  • Former U.S. President Donald Trump

Umerov stated that this proposal was officially conveyed to the Russian side as part of efforts to break the deadlock in the conflict through direct dialogue.

Following the latest diplomatic discussions, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan confirmed to the press that Ukraine and Russia had “in principle agreed” to hold such a high-level meeting. No official date or location has been confirmed so far, but Istanbul and Ankara are reportedly being considered as possible venues.
